SUNRISE BROWN JOINS EARTH GUARDIANS IN DEMANDING CLIMATE ACTION IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

In light of COP27, the environmental justice group peacefully protests alongside other activists to urge world leaders to take immediate and decisive action against climate change

Washington, D.C. - With the 27th Conference of the Parties taking place in Egypt, Sunrise Brown marched with other environmental activists on Saturday, November 12th. The march began with a rally on the Lincoln Memorial steps at 12:30pm, after which the protestors walked to the Capitol building. Once at the Capitol, protestors took part in a peaceful demonstration and a reading of their demands.

Sunrise Brown joined Earth Guardians and other environmental activists to demand that world leaders: criminalize ecocide and cut ties with the fossil fuel industry; invest in community resiliency and renewable energy; center environmental justice in climate policy. “We are mobilizing youth and calling on world leaders to take tangible action towards fighting climate catastrophe,” said Lizzy Duke-Moe, a Brown Sunrise leading member. “The time is now for world leaders to listen to their youth clamoring for a future.”

This is not the first time that a Conference of the Parties has been met with protest. During COP26 last year, tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets to demand decisive climate action and condemn greenwashing by governments and corporations. In spite of this, the conference ultimately ended in a failure to commit to phasing out fossil fuels fast enough to keep global warming below 1.5C.
